Read Genesis in parts! (PDF)
Dividing up the voices in the text keeps everyone involved and helps readers pay attention. • In the stories of the creation, fall, and flood (chapters 1-9), help your kids notice how God created everything good, but people (with help from a certain serpent) brought evil into the world. Notice how God deals with human sin through both mercy and punishment. Point out God's goal, which is to have a good relationship with human beings again—if only they would stop doing evil.
• Don't get bogged down in the genealogies (chapters 5, 10, 36, 46). Have your kids listen for any names they recognize from the Bible or from names of friends and classmates. • Track the story of Abraham's family throughout Genesis (beginning in chapter 11). His family becomes the nation of Israel, and God's promises to him become promises to Israel. Consider making a family tree as you read to help your kids see the relationships between Abraham and his descendants in Genesis. • The story of Joseph (chapters 37 & 39-47) is an outstanding story for teaching your kids about forgiveness. Notice how Joseph never does any harm to his brothers who treated him so badly, but tests them to see if they have changed. And when he sees that they have, he eagerly reveals himself to them and then provides for all their families. COOL STUFF

Genesis is almost entirely story, with a few genealogies and poems. It tells about God's creation of human life and about humanity's first sins. Then it introduces Abraham and his family, the people through whom God chose to redeem the world. Genesis tracks the story of Abraham's family through the time of his great-grandsons, Joseph and his brothers.
Genesis gets the story of the Bible started! It sets the stage for God's history-long effort to address human sin with redemption rather than with judgment. In Genesis, God punishes sin but also works to build a relationship with those who serve him. These people—particularly Abraham's family—bring to the world the hope of life restored to its fullest through reconciliation with God.
Key stories and people in Genesis include the creation & fall (chapters 1-4), Noah and the great flood (6-9), Abraham (11-25), and Abraham's first descendants (25-50), especially Joseph (37 & 39-50).
